I spent the july 2006 in Ekaterinburg, Russia. It is the capital of

the Ural region. It was founded by Peter the great at around the
same time as st Petersburg. It has been a center of mining industry
since then. Distance from Moscow is 1700 km. Its located at the border
between Europe and Asia

I travelled there by train which is in my opinion the the best and
most exotic way to travel in russia at least if you know at least some
russian. There is a direct train from st Peter or Moscow about 30
