Pilsen 2006

I spent my clerkship
in the university hospital of Pilsen in the internal medicine clinic. It
was quite similar to the Finnish equivalents. The equipment was in certain
aspects just as good as in the university hospital of Helsinki. Only the facilities perhaps looked
a bit old, even though they were relatively new. The thing that I noticed
especially was that nobody used disinfection or even washed their hands between
the patients and when entering a ward. Only one doctor washed his hands once-
before he went for lunch. The patients had more severe complications in nephrology
etc.

I chose the research project of Placky University, department of biochemistry, “Evaluation of natural substances toxicity using in vitro methods” because the description of this particular group on the IFMSA database. It was good english, informative, interesting and it promised the student a real project of his or hers own. I got the feeling that a foreign student was welcome and that I wouldn’t be just wandering around in the lab, having nothing to do. I wasn’t wrong.
