I spent an
exciting month this summer living in Vienna and travelling around Europe. I made this journey with my close
friend, we wanted to experience our first exchange together. Our journey began
from Tampere from where we flew to Frankfurt. We spent one night there and then
we continued our travel to Vienna by train. The flight cost around 50
euros and the train ticket 30 euros.

I spent four weeks doing my clinical clerkship
at the department of anaesthesiology. The hospital (Allgemeines Krankenhaus, AKH)
is one of the biggest in Europe and I found it really huge compared to university hospitals in Finland. The doctors at my department spoke
very good english and explained me a lot of things in the operation rooms.. I
was allowed to practise iv-canulation, mask ventilation and intubation. I also
set some larynx-masks. During the first week I had a spesial doctor supervising
me but after that it was not so organized anymore. When I had nothing to do I

I did my
clinical clerkship in July in Innsbruck, Austria, at the Universitäts Krankenhaus
Innsbruck. I worked at the General Internal Medicine, although it was stated in
my CA that I work at the Rheumatology. The hospital only had an outpatient
clinic for rheumatology, and that's why I was put to the General Int. Medicine
instead. It was ok, although most of the patients had cardiological or
pulmonological problems that I hadn't studied at all.

I worked in the LKH
(Landeskrankenhaus), at the department of pulmology. The hospital was very
large university hospital. Every morning we went to work by tram. We bought a
"Monatskarte" (31,10 e), and with that we could travel by tram and by bus all
month. We had to change the tram at Jakominiplatz. Trams went quite often, so
the maximum waitingtime was about 10 minutes. It didn´t take more than 15
minutes to go to the hospital. After our first week there, they began to do
some reconstructions, so we had to take a bus from Jakominiplatz to the

In July 2006 I worked four weeks at the
University clinic department of internal medicine in Innsbruck in Austria. Work included mainly taking of
blood samples, putting on infusions and studying patient cases and examinating
patients. Attending to patient rounds was also a major part of the daily
routine. For two weeks there were also two local students with me at the
department. We worked quite a lot together what helped a lot. All the doctors
were really friendly and guided and teached us suprisingly much. Also patients

I was doing my clerkship in
Landeskrankenhaus Graz (LKH Graz) in the department of pediatric surgery. For
an exchange student the department was great. I was working there with another
AMSA-student from Canada. I was positively surprised of the
reception we had. The first day we were given a proper orientation and we got a
schedule for the next four weeks. We were allowed to assist and watch the
operations at the day- and week surgery as well as in bigger operations. There
was also a possibility to follow the doctors on-call. Daily we had meetings in

During July 2006 I worked at the Graz Landeskrankenhaus. I was
placed at the Department of Anesthesiology. Before going to Austria,
I had already worked at anesthesiology for one month in Finland.
I was actually quite surprised how similar Austria
and Finland are.
I had to be at the operation theatre every weekday at 7:30 a.m. and I usually left at 2 p.m. There were few days when I stayed until 4 p.m. Also, I was able to take two days off when I went to Innsbruck. It was not a problem, I just had to ask.

I spend a really nice July in Innsbruck. I arrived Innsbruck two days late but got used to the atmosphere there really fast. My flight from Helsinki airport to Copenhagen was delayed and I luckily got straight flight to Munchen and from there I took train to Innsbruck main railway station. My contact from there came to pick me up from the station with car and we drove little bit around the city of Innsbruck. My first picture from the city in the night time was beautiful. The landscapes are so unique in Innsbruck. The steep Alps arises next to the downtown and a large river crosses the city.
