I did my clerkship in the city of Semarang, which is located in the central Java in Indonesia. My department was general surgery, where I was supposed to examine patients in the emergency, wards and polyclinic, and assist in the operations in the operation room. There was not much control whether I was at the hospital or no, although the local students said that being the only white people around, everybody would immediately recognize if I was missing. The local students basically looked after me, as they told me where to go and when, as there was not any structural program compiled

I graduated on Med school on May 2006 and just wanted to travel somewhere far away after that. I wanted to add some social and cultural program to my travel so I choosed option to go to IFMSA professional exchange. My choises for placement were Ecuador, Indonesia and Ghana - I just wanted to go some warm country far away! I didn´t know that much about Indonesia before I was actually accepted there. Yogyakarta sounded fine which its reputation as student city and cultural centre of Jawa island. I chose otorhinolaryngology, because I had found ORL very interesting during studies.
