Helsinki

Welcome to Helsinki!

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and with its 560 000 inhabitants the biggest city of the country. Around 1,2 million Finns (almost one quarter of the whole population) live in the capital area. Helsinki is a unique combination of East and West, city and nature, traditional and modern. Located on the south coast Helsinki is easily accessible by air and by sea. Summer in Helsinki with its many attractions and festivals is definitely an experience.

The Local Lommittee in Helsinki consists of four Local Exchange Officers and two to three Local Project Officers. Exchange Officers take care of outgoing and incoming students’ practicalties. Project Officers run many IFMSA projects and local projects in Helsinki during the academic terms. In addition we have a Local President coordinating all the local activities. The local officers are either members of LKS (the finnish-speaking medical students’ organisation in Helsinki) or Thorax (Swedish-speaking students’ organisation). We meet up more or less regularly to plan our activities or just to chat and have fun together.

Around 30 exchange students carry out their exchange in Helsinki every year. If you come to Finland during the winter you will most probably be placed in Helsinki. Almost all the students stay either at medical students’ apartments called the Mediomas or in the summertime at Fornix at the Women’s clinic close to the Meilahti hospital. In July and August we guarantee that we arrange plenty of social events. During the winter we don´t have the possibility to organise that many activities.
