Kuopio

Kuopio is a city of approximately 90 000 people in the Eastern Finland.  The city is renowned for its peacefulness: beautiful lakes and pure nature.  Of course we don’t lack a student-friendly night life, either: we have a lively city center with fun pubs and clubs. The people are usually warm and friendly. For more information about the city you can visit the city’s home page: (http://www.kuopio.fi/englishhome.nsf).

The warmest month is July, when the mean temperature is +19 °C. The coldest month is December, when the mean temperature is -12 °C. During summer the temperature can rise as high as 27°C, in the winter the coldest temperature might be even -30°C. The weather varies a lot. Here you are sure to go to sauna and swimming, be it summer or winter!

Each year we have approximately 15 exchange students through IFMSA. Most of the exchange students are situated here during the summer months: July or August. During the winter there are 0-1 students per month through IFMSA, but there are plenty of Erasmus- exchange students and students from all over the world doing their Master’s degrees. So you won’t be lonely even if you’re planning to come during the winter!

Our Local Committee consists of three exchange officers, two project officers and a local president. Every arriving student has a contact person, who helps them with practicalities.

We arrange social programme for the exchange students, but during the winter we’re unable to arrange it as actively as in summer. But any time you come, the practicalities will be well taken care of! For exchange students we rent apartments from medical students or from KUOPAS, a student housing company http://www.kuopas.fi/index.asp?language=2. The hospital and university are near to the city, and it’s quite easy to move around in Kuopio. You can ask anything from our local officers or send e-mail to all of us: our local committee’s e-mail address is lc_kuopio (at) fimsic.org.

Welcome to Kuopio!
