What is FiMSIC?

FiMSIC (Finnish Medical Students' International Committee) is the international committee of FiMSA (Finnish Medical Students’ Association). FiMSIC is the national member organisation of Finland in IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations) and is responsible for the international relations of Finnish medical students. FiMSIC has five local committees, one in each city with a medical school. These are Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Kuopio and Oulu.

Regional Cooperation

Finnish medical students were amongst the founders of IFMSA in 1951. Within IFMSA FiMSIC cooperates on a regional level with the other Nordic IFMSA organisations through FINO (Federation of International Nordic Medical Students’ Organisations) and in the Baltic Sea Region through BFC (Baltic Sea Friendship Club). FiMSIC has a long history and knowledge base of organising exchanges and projects both in Finland and on the international level. However, we are always on the lookout for new ideas and faces to contribute to the activities!

Facts about Finland

Finland is situated in Northern Europe and shares borders with Sweden, Russia, Norway and the Baltic Sea. Although its surface area is the 8th largest in Europe, there are only around 5.3 million inhabitants. Finland is well known from its pure nature and tranquility combined with modern technology. Large proportion of the area of Finland is covered with unique forests and over 188 000 inland lakes. Majority of Finns (93 %) speak Finnish as their mother tongue and there are smaller minorities of Swedish speaking population (6 %) and Sami people.

Exchanges

FiMSIC activities are based on exchanges and projects. In exchanges FiMSIC is active in both SCORE and SCOPE. FiMSIC hosts annually over a hundred SCORE and SCOPE students in the five local committees. The same number of Finnish students participate in the exchange programmes and can choose their destination from over 40 countries.

Projects

In the field of project work FiMSIC is active in SCOPH, SCORA and SCORP and also organises Global Health activities. Various events are organised around the year and they include activities from nationally organised seminars and trainings to short campaigns and events on the local level. FiMSIC also offers a choice of participating in IFMSA projects and various summer schools all over the world.
